Good evening FLRSD,

It is our hope that you had some opportunity to find a few moments of rest and rejuvenation over the extended days and for everyone who observed the Easter Holiday weekend, we hope that your time in this holiest of days for you was spent in peace, faith and love.

As we begin to head towards spring break we start to embark on planning and participating in end of year activities. We must focus on the remaining school days for everyone. Our student daily attendance has improved dramatically over the last year and a half and our chronic absenteeism (defined as 10% of the school year which equates to 18 days) is down as a result. Every day matters as we are developing, securing and reinforcing our future success each day. To everyone in the midst of MCAS, keep working hard and do your best- after all that is the best path to future success.

For our current HS students, in grades 9-11, what happens in Term 4 prepares one for next year: academically (success in future classes, class rank, transcripts that follow to college, the military or workforce) and athletically (all fall sports eligibility is determined by a student's overall grades this year). Therefore, we must ensure that we are developing solid habits of mind for all K-8 students, reinforcing what happens daily in and out of class matters. This is not for competition to ensure perfection, but as the ladder that builds the habits of resiliency that are found in our vision of a graduate and needed throughout life.

With a focus on the above, something was shared with me - different than the typical Sunday story, it connects perfectly with the reminder for our students to focus on the future by working today. Although this mentions athletics, the premise is true for all of our artists, musicians, dancers, theater members, club members, those motivated by STEM, History, Writing, Government, the trades, business, being in the military, becoming a first responder or any field one eventually chooses.  It is vital that we take advantage of each opportunity to learn. If you choose to read it, I hope you can reflect on its importance for our students and for us. Just enough should never be good enough!

The End Result

In my career at all levels I have seen many students work diligently as the story discussed, for game day until the final day of class, until the final out or until the end of a fundraiser. So many are giving this effort for the intrinsic value of learning, giving, preparing and they appreciate that the grind is hard which allows them to keep going even if they would rather be elsewhere. So much of this is due to the role modeling provided by you at home and we thank you for it. It also comes from  their role models at school, on the fields, on the stage, at work or anywhere else your child lives.

So many of our Principals, Assistant Principals, Faculty, Staff, Paraprofessionals, Counselors, School Psychologists, Schedulers, Nurses, IT and Library Media Staff, SRO, coaches, Advisors, School Psychologists, Maintenance, Custodial and Cafeteria workers everyday give it their all when others are not watching, or others are not working as hard to engage, motivate and support our students regardless of position. Combined with a Central Office Staff and  Administration,School Committee,Town Officials, First Responders, community partners and of course parents, guardians and loved ones who do whatever is necessary so that Game Day(be it a preparation for a test, for the future, for opening night of the play or concert, etc.) happens for all of our students.  Everyone who has collaborated to ensure “Game Day” runs smoothly deserve our thanks and our appreciation.Let them know!

To everyone in the midst of MCAS, keep working hard and do your best - after all that is the best path to future success.

May this week be filled with kindness, appreciation and preparation for whatever  “Game Day” is in our students'(and our) dreams this week and in future weeks.
