Good evening FLRSD,

Our hearts and thoughts are with the families and communities in Maine. As we think about not only the victims but the profound number of local families with loved ones in the area, be it living in the area as residents or as college students. Please continue to keep them in your thoughts.

It is hard to believe that October is almost complete and that companies have been inundating us with holiday shopping ideas since the middle of the month. Although I too, am caught up in the early euphoria of what is the perfect gift to get someone, I can vividly remember being told to slow down and enjoy today because it is the only absolute day we have. The older I get, the more I see and the truer this advice becomes. It is even more evident with the above mentioned tragedy in Maine.

This story, should you choose to read it, is a gentle reminder that we must strive to fully live in peace and in a good place and that we should focus our energy on the big picture, not “the little dot.”   Enjoy this!

 The Red Dot

As I read this story, it reminds me of the lessons so many of us have been taught - we might not have a choice in what is happening or how someone is acting, but we do have a choice in how we react or let it affect our lives. We can see the glass half full or we can choose to see the glass half empty. The choice is ours! No matter how much we try to understand the past, we cannot change it. What we can change is the narrative we apply to our present and our future! Holding on to negativity and anger builds negativity and anger. What and how we discuss the past and what has happened is an indication of who we are today!

Everyday I am reminded by our Teachers, Paraprofessionals, Directors, Assistant Principals, Staff, Secretaries, Nurses, Counselors, Schedulers, Coaches, Advisors, Maintenance Custodial and Food Service staff, Library and IT staff, as well as Central Office Administration and Staff, School Committee, Town Hall officials, First Responders and our Community Business Partners that they each individually and collectively come to work, despite “the dots” in their lives and provide our students and community with opportunities to grow, to blossom and to find their path. I thank each of them for the efforts they individually and collectively put forth to see the positives, embrace the joy and work to improve on anything we have control over.

May your glass overflow this week, and if not, may you at least find the ability to see around the glass and take in everything else that is positive and eventually ignore the tiny dots!!!!

With gratitude and in peace

Alan
