IJM- Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Policy Information

Introduction:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a transformative educational resource that enables personalized learning experiences, fosters critical thinking, and promotes creativity. Using AI responsibly can prepare students for a rapidly evolving technological future.

This policy outlines how AI will be used within the Freetown Lakeville Regional School District (FLRSD). It details the acceptable, ethical, and responsible use of AI. This policy aims to support innovative teaching and learning practices, protect student data privacy, uphold academic integrity, and ensure equitable learning opportunities for all students while fostering essential AI literacy.

Definitions:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) - refers to computer technology that emulates human intelligence by simulating complex tasks.

  • Generative (AI) - is a form of AI that creates new content, such as text, images, videos, or music, based on user prompt(s) or input

  • Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) - AI language model known for its ability to generate text that is human-like, respond to questions, and engage in conversation

  • Prompt(s) - is the input provided to a large language model (LLM) can vary from simple questions to complex instructions or creative writing. The clarity and specificity of the prompt largely determine the quality of the AI's output.

  • Personally Identifying Information (PII) - is any information or data that can be used to identify or connect to a person. Examples include contact information (name, date of birth, email address), health information (medical details), and academic information (grades, transcripts, GPA).

Acceptable Use for Students:

  1. Students must never input any PII into AI platforms under any circumstances.

  2. Students are only permitted to use AI platforms that have been approved by the FLRSD Technology Department.

  3. Students may use AI tools for educational purposes such as research, problem-solving, and skill development, but only under the direct guidance of their specific teachers/staff and by using platforms approved by FLRSD’s Technology Department.

  4. Students must follow their specific teacher/staff directions and comply with academic integrity and plagiarism policies. When in doubt, students should consult their specific teacher/staff to ensure appropriate use of AI.

  5. Students must properly cite AI-generated text, images, or other content submitted for academic assignments in a manner appropriate for their grade level. Work submitted by a student is presumed to be their original work unless it is properly cited. Failing to cite AI-generated content, whether in whole or in part, is considered academically dishonest and a violation of academic integrity policy and practice. Students using AI tools need to verify and validate the content before it is submitted to ensure accuracy and completeness. Students found using AI tools for plagiarism, cheating, or other forms of academic dishonesty will face disciplinary consequences.

  6. Students must not use AI tools to access, create, or share harmful, inappropriate, or unethical content. Students should also refrain from using AI to infringe on others' privacy. Additionally, students are prohibited from using AI tools to hack or bypass content filters and security measures. If any security breaches, suspicious activities, or exposure to inappropriate content occur during the use of AI, students must report them immediately to school authorities.

Acceptable Use for FLRSD Teachers/Staff:

  1. FLRSD Teachers/Staff will communicate to students whether and which AI tools or AI-generated content can be used for assignments, and align with instructional and curricular goals.

  2. FLRSD Teachers/Staff are responsible for ensuring the accuracy, appropriateness, and relevance of all AI-generated materials before sharing them with students, families, or the public. While AI can be a helpful tool for content creation, all outputs must be thoroughly reviewed, fact-checked, and proofread to identify errors, bias, or potentially harmful content

  3. FLRSD Teachers/Staff must never enter PII into GPT prompts or other AI tools. This includes contact information such as names, email addresses, and hometowns; health information like medical records or details; and academic information including grades, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and transcripts related to any student, teacher, or staff member.

Conclusion:

By following these guidelines, students, teachers, and staff can leverage AI to enhance the educational experiences while upholding academic integrity and ethical responsibility.

This policy will be reviewed and updated periodically to ensure it aligns with advancements in AI technology, evolving legal and ethical standards, and the changing needs of the K-12 educational environment.
