Happy Thanksgiving from the PTO!

Grade Five Math and Science:

Students will begin working on our unit on four operations with whole numbers and decimals. Upon return from Thanksgiving break we will begin with addition and subtraction with whole numbers and decimals.  In science we will be continuing our unit on mixtures. Students will be learning to differentiate between a physical and chemical change and learn the rules to identify if a chemical change has occurred. Students will be learning that chemical changes cannot be undone.

Grade Five ELA and Social Studies:

In ELA classes, the fifth graders will be continuing to practice answering response-to-text questions and using text evidence to support their claims. We will also be continuing our study of Greek and Latin roots to further develop students' word solving skills. Students will also be working on novel studies of rich texts.  Students continue to explore each of the 13 English Colonies in social studies class, as well as to learn about important earlier leaders and the reasons each one was founded.

Grade Four Math and Science:

In math we are starting our exploration into beginning algebra concepts and algebraic thinking by studying multiplication as a comparison, for example understanding statements like this: 21 is 3 times as many as 7. We will also be solving for the unknown in both multiplication and division problems, and using bar models to represent multiplication and division equations. In science we are excited to delve into our Earth science unit where we will discover that studying landforms and rock layers can help us to understand erosion, deposition, and the changes to the Earth's landscape over time.

Grade Four ELA and Social Studies:

The fourth graders are working on writing expository paragraphs using topic sentences, detail sentences and clinchers. We are also working on capitalization and punctuation. We are also making inferences when we read, as it is important to use the text and our background knowledge. We will be continuing to expand our vocabulary using Flocabulary. They will be learning all about the Northeast Region.  We will be using our map skills to learn about the states, capitals, landforms and bodies of water. The natural resources, climate and the economy are some of the important topics that we will cover about our region.
