Nurse’s Notes:

Cold and flu season is here.  The Department of Public Health and the American Academy of Pediatrics have stated that the Northeast and much of the US are seeing an increase in respiratory illness in infants and children, some of which are requiring hospitalization. Many illnesses are caused by respiratory infections such as; rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), enterovirus, and influenza.  Children are more susceptible to these illnesses during the fall and winter months, even more so this year as there has been limited exposure to these viruses previously. As it is anticipated that there could be more respiratory illnesses as RSV continues to spread and the flu season continues, I would like to offer a few tips on staying healthy this season.  Steps we can all take to stay healthy include: practicing good hand hygiene, using hand sanitizer, covering coughs and sneezes with a tissues or elbow, keeping children home if there is difficulty breathing with shortness of breath, cough, congestion, runny nose or sore throat until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medications that reduce fever, cleaning high touch surfaces frequently with household disinfectants, and avoiding social gatherings if you or your children are ill.
