Dear GRAIS Families,

We had a fun week hosting the Scholastic Book Fair.  A great deal of thanks goes out to the PTO board members for organizing and running it, as well as to all the parents/guardians who volunteered to help at the event.  We could not have had such a successful fair without you!

Tournament of Books:

Mrs. Grabke, our library/media specialist has created a wonderfully engaging new reading challenge that will be explained during library classes.  If you have any questions, please contact her at cgrabke@freelake.org.

  1. There will be 16 books at the beginning of the tournament.  Each book is paired to “face off” against another book, so there are 8 rivalries to begin with.  Students will vote for their favorite book in each rivalry, eliminating half the books in each round.

  1. There will be 4 rounds where books face off against each other.  Each round is 8 weeks long.  Students will have this time to read the books and cast their votes.

  1. Round 1, the Sweet 16,  will be from October 10th-November 27th.  Round 2, the Elite 8, will be from November 28th-January 22nd.  Round 3, the Final 4, will be from January 23rd-March 18th.  The last round, the Game, will be from March 19th-May 14th.  The winning book will be announced May 21st.

  1. Voting will take place during each round.  Students may vote multiple times, but once for each rivalry (8 times in the first round, 4 times in the second round, 2 times in the third round and once in the final round.)

  1. For the first round, students must have read the book(s) that they are voting for.  In rounds 2-the final round, students must have read both books in the rivalry.

  1. Students can’t cancel out their vote by voting for the rival book in the same round, but they can vote for the rival book in the following round.

  1. Drawings will take place each week from the ballots that have been cast and winners will win a small prize.  The more often that students vote, the more chances they will have to win.

  1. All students will fill out a bracket predicting the winners for each round.  One point will be given for each correct guess.  The student(s) with the highest points at the end of the last round will be awarded a prize.

Opportunities from Campus Programs:

Grade Four ELA:

In ELA, students are getting used to our daily routine of reading, writing and working together. We will be reading a story called Earthquakes from the reading program Wonders and learning about different text features that help us understand a nonfiction text.  We are also learning about the five story elements (character, setting, plot, conflict, and theme) while reading our first  novel Because of Winn Dixie.

Grade Four Math:

Fourth graders have been learning about how to use a place value chart to find the value of each digit in a multi-digit number. We’ve also been practicing writing and reading numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word form. The students have been using place value skills to compare large numbers, and to add and subtract multi-digit numbers.

Grade Five ELA:

Fifth graders have been learning about the author's perspective as they read a story titled Camping with the President by Ginger Wadsworth.  It's a story about how President Theodore Roosevelt's camping trip in Yosemite with naturalist John Muir changed his view of the land.  By thinking about an author's perspective, students are able to set a purpose for reading.

Grade Five Math:

In fifth grade math, students have been working on factors, multiples, and divisibility.  They have been refreshing their memory by practicing our multiplication facts using Multiplication by Heart on their Chromebooks.  Students have been encouraged to also study their facts at home, so they can efficiently apply them to fifth grade math skills this year.  We will soon be moving on to whole numbers and decimal place values.

PTO Corner:

Thank you to all who could volunteer to help.  We hope the kids came home saying they had a fun time.

Our next event will be the Halloween social scheduled for October 20th from 6 -8 p.m. at GRAIS.  More information will be coming soon.  We will need a large number of volunteers to make this event happen.  Keep an eye out for that sign up genius!!
