Mr. Ward’s Message:

A huge SHOUTOUT to Mrs. deMedeiros and six of her students who participated in a Math Talk lesson before the Freetown Lakeville School Committee at Wednesday’s meeting.  Mrs. deMedeiros, Jaxson, Nora, Chloe, Vincenzo, Kaden, and Sophia job well done! YOU MADE US ALL SO VERY PROUD! 

With the winter weather upon us FES would like to remind families and friends that students will be going outside for recess as much as possible if the weather permits.  Each day our intention is to get students outside as much as we can.  Thus, please have your child bundle up each day for a potential outdoor recess. 

FES News and Happenings…

  • Grade 3 News...Students in grade 3 across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts participate in their first MCAS exam.  Students will be tested in English Language Arts and Mathematics.  The MCAS exam is a computer based exam in which students will take the exam on the computer.  MCAS dates for students in Grade 3 at FES will be:

    • April 4 & 5 for English Language Arts

    • May 17 & 18 for Mathematics

  • Winter Scholastic Book Fair will take place during the week of January 30 - February 2.  Teachers will share with their students the day and time they will visit the Book Fair.  Additionally, there will be a Family Book Fair Night on Wednesday, February 1st from 5:30 - 7:00 PM.

Goal:  94% of the FES student population will attend school daily.  

  • The September average student daily attendance was 95%.  Goal achieved!

  • The October average student daily attendance was 95%.  Goal achieved!  

  • The November average student daily attendance was 94%.  Goal achieved!  

  • The December average student daily attendance was 89%.  We did not achieve our goal!

Upcoming Events:

January 30 - February 2:  Scholastic Book Fair Week

February Vacation Week will take place the week of February 20-24.  School will resume again on Monday, February 27th.

Grade Level Happenings from the Week of January 16-20:

Pre-School:  This week in preschool we learned all about the letter o with our a Lively Letter, a cute baby!  We also learned about penguins and how their waterproof feathers have helped them adapt to their cold climate.

Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten our Fundations lesson was tapping words and reviewing uppercase letters A-G. Our high frequency word was “do”. Our comprehension skill was using illustrations to get information and we continued to discuss characters and setting. In math we introduced subtraction and in science we discussed animal habitats.

Grade 1:  This week in first grade we finished up Unit 6 in FUNdations. We learned about suffix -s. For comprehension we discussed how plants change as they grow and made and confirmed predictions about the text. In math this week we learned how to add three numbers using previously learned strategies like making a ten and doubles facts. For science we are finishing up the light unit.  

Grade 2:  This week in second grade reading we worked on finding main idea and key details in nonfiction texts. In Fundations we learned about r-controlled vowels “er”, “ir”, and “ur”, which all make the sound /er/. In math we worked on strategies for subtracting 3-digit numbers with regrouping. In writing we began our informational animal reports. In Science we continued to work on understanding properties and states of matter.

Grade 3: This week in third grade reading we continued to talk about themes and read a story called Coming to America. In math students solved both one and two step word problems using CUBES and an efficient strategy to solve. In science, students had fun moving through hands on  stations to explore magnets. 

Art:   Kindergartners listened to The Mitten by Jan Brett and then they designed their own patterned symmetrical mittens.  Grade 1 learned about the abstract art of Alma Woodsy Thomas  and then painted their own abstract color explosion in her style.  Grade 2 learned how to mix colors that are next to each other on the color wheel to make tertiary colors (third set of colors).  They painted an Ant-Arctic sky with watercolors and added salt for an icy effect.  Grade 3 drew large flowers in the style of Georgia O’Keefe.

Physical Education:  Students participated in a fitness circuit which included running activities, stretching, push ups, sit ups, stretch bands, step aerobics, burpees, jumping jacks, etc.

Music:  This week, students K-3 have started the 2nd week of their unit on listening. Grade 1 and Kindergarten will listen to music for dynamics, tempo and directions as well as music from Haydn. 2nd grade will listen to music of Beethoven and respond to vocal and instrumental musical elements. 3rd Grade will listen for changes in meter and pitch.

Library:  During library class this week, kindergarten and first grade students chose a book or article to listen to about the Lunar New Year and then responded by filling out a chart on the Seesaw website. Second grade students continued to work on their independent research project. Third grade students took an assessment.
