Mr. Ward’s Message:

With each passing month it is with great pride at Freetown Elementary School that we continue the deep, embedded tradition of Student of Month ceremonies.  With each month a student from each classroom is nominated by peers and/or their teacher.  Students nominated have put forth their best efforts in their school work, behavior, and efforts.  For the month of September these students best exemplify what it means to be a Freetown Elementary Student.  Congratulations to the September students that were nominated…

Fire Safety Week at FES…

All Freetown Elementary School students this week also participated in a Fire Safety Day with the Freetown Fire Department.  Students learned about proper safety tips dealing with fire prevention.  They learned about dialing 9-1-1, smoke detectors, what to do in case of a fire, “stop, drop, cover, and roll” and family meeting place and much more.

PTO Corner:

News and Happenings around the classrooms:

Preschool: This week in preschool, we learned about fire safety.  We enjoyed a presentation by the local department.  They taught our preschoolers how to crawl under smoke, stop, drop and roll, and how to call 911 in an emergency.  Thank you, firefighters!  We also reviewed letters p, b, and t this week.  One class  used a variety of cut-out paper shapes to create fire trucks.   Another class made fire fighter hats.  Lastly, we participated in our school wide Fun Run!

Kindergarten: In kindergarten this week, we learned the name, sound and proper letter formation for the letters  i and u.  We reviewed the high frequency words “I” and “can”. Our math lesson focused on making numbers 3, 4, 5. We had a visit from the Freetown firefighters to teach us the importance of fire safety. Students were engaged and excited throughout their time and of course, students had such a great time with the Fun Run!

Grade 1:  This week in first grade we began to work on beginning sounds and spelling CVC words. For comprehension we reviewed visualization and retelling in stories. In writing we finished up the launching unit in Writer’s Workshop and began working on personal narratives. For math this week we learned about finding missing addends in number bonds and word problems. In science we started the sound unit. We will be experimenting with sound and pitch using various materials. We also had a blast at the Fun Run! Thank you to all the families and PTO for making it a success!

Grade 2:  This week in second grade we read nonfiction texts and focused on asking and answering questions about the texts. In Fundations we worked with closed exception syllables. In math we used fact family equations to show how subtraction problems can be solved using related addition facts. In writing we worked on generating ideas for writing and learned about the parts of speech nouns and verbs and what makes a complete sentence. We had a visit from the Freetown Fire Department for a fire safety lesson. We also had our exciting Fun Run! Thank you for supporting us in this great event!

Grade 3:  This week in third grade we focused on responding to writing and using the text as evidence in our answers with stories from our Wonders reading program. In math students were introduced to division and practiced solving problems by using an array or equal groups. In science students will continue to define and talk about balanced and unbalanced forces. We had a visit from the Freetown Fire Department for a fire prevention lesson. We also had our exciting Fun Run! Thank you for all of the support and donations.

Music: This week, students K-3 are starting the fourth week of their unit on being expressive in music. We will learn new songs, games, and movements to be performed with appropriate musicality. Grades 2 and 3 are also continuing to  explore mallet instruments and composing.

Art:  Kindergarteners learned the difference between  permanent markers and water based markers when they traced their sharpie lines with crayola markers and then sprayed the paper with water!  Grade 1 learned about the abstract art of Paul Klee and created an alphabet abstract design and colored while considering balance in their design.   Grade 2 completed their paper and sharpie Mehndi hand design.  Grade 3 completed their continuous line designs by gluing it onto construction paper and adding a radial glitter design.

Physical Education:  This week students worked on throwing, kicking, and catching by participating in a variety of stations.

Library:  This week during library class, kindergarten students started using their Chromebooks. We read a book about the Internet and then students played Keyboard Zoo and found each letter on the keyboard.  First and second grade students worked on a fire safety choice and listened to a book or article of their choice about fire safety. Students  responded to a writing prompt on Seesaw or Google Slides.  Third grade students took a pre-assessment on information literacy.
