Mr. Ward’s Message:

Freetown Elementary School would like to say “THANK YOU” for an absolutely amazing school year.  The year was filled with lots of learning and plenty of fun activities along the way.  Your child worked hard each day putting their best effort forward.  The gains that were made this year were incredible.  FES would like to wish each family a happy, safe, and fun summer with plenty of time to rest, create new memories, and have fun!  Enjoy your summer!

Summer Reading/Math Work for students in grades K-2…

Children are NOT being assigned a specific grade-level title to read for a summer assignment.  Instead, we want students to find and enjoy books that pique their interests. To make this FUN for your child…. we have enclosed in your child’s report card the “Read in 30 Places” worksheet to fill out.  Summer is the perfect time to grab a book and throw it in that beach bag or take it with you in the car or to a friend’s house to sleep over!  Read on the front porch, in the backyard or even in the pool!  Again, the goal:  READ!  Complete the Read in 30 Places worksheet and fill out the back where you write a review of your FAVORITE BOOK!  Return the worksheet to the school on the first day and your child will earn a prize!

iReady Summer Math Program

Your child has used the iReady Instructional Program this school year in mathematics.  This is an adaptive program set to your child’s math level.  The program is used to practice, reinforce, and enhance math skills.    Your child will continue to have access to this program over the summer.  Please have your child continue to use this program throughout the summer to maintain their mathematical skills.  Log-in information will be shared with your child in his/her report card.        https://login.i-ready.com/

Morgan Tremblay and Annie Smith (FLMS Grade 8 Students)...

Morgan and Annie are former Freetown Foxes who recently completed their 8th Grade Civic Action Project.  Morgan and Annie proudly collected over 300 books to be donated to Freetown Elementary School.  Below you can read their write-up…

“We chose to donate books to the Freetown Elementary School for our 8th Grade Civic Action Project. We chose to do this because giving back to the community is something important to us. Attending FES when we were younger was a huge inspiration for our choice for our Civic Action Project. We have both borrowed many books from the FES library and we wanted to finally give back. Also, we know that there are many people like us who just have their old books lying around that aren't in use anymore, therefore we wanted the books to have a purpose again and give the students a chance to experience books they may have never seen.”

News and Happenings from the classrooms for the week of June 12-16:

Pre-School:   This week in preschool, we celebrated our summer birthdays.  We also celebrated Backwards Day!  We followed our classroom schedule backwards, walked in line backwards, counted backwards, and even wore some of our clothes backwards!  One class looked “back” on their favorite memories.  Our afternoon pre-kindergarten students graduated on Thursday.   We are so proud of them and we wish them all the best in kindergarten!

Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten we spent time reviewing skills from all academic areas. We completed end of the year activities which highlighted personal favorites and remembrances from our year in Kindergarten. We had fun at the Fox Festival(Thank you PTO and all volunteers) and our End of Year picnic. We discussed Father's Day and completed a variety of activities(In the form of gifts) for the dads and those who are like dads in our lives.

Grade 1: This week in first grade we finished up unit 12 in FUNdations. We focused on multisyllabic words. For comprehension we reviewed character, setting, and plot. For writing and science, the students finished their non-fiction animal research books and shared them out with the class. In math, we finished up the time and money unit.

Grade 2: This week in second grade math we worked with arrays, which lead to the foundation of multiplication. The students learned how to develop repeated addition sentences by counting groups of objects in a row and the numbers of rows in an array. In Fundations we continued to w review words with the 6 syllable types. In reading we reviewed skills we learned throughout the year. In Social Studies we continued to learn about national symbols. We had our grade-level culminating activity on Wednesday - the Second Grade Star Spangled Spectacular - where students showcased what they have learned in writing, reading, social studies, music and art. It was a wonderful event, and we were so proud of the kids!!

Grade 3: Third graders had a very memorable, bittersweet last full week of school here at FES!   They had their last Fox Festival and made many memories with their peers.  They also participated in Career Day, which involved listening to multiple parents discuss their career with a followup activity and/or craft.  Students enjoyed the parents’ presentations and asked great questions.  They were very inspired about the career options they can choose from someday!  Finally, students have finished the story, “The Secret Soldier” to coincide with their biography unit.  We are so proud of these third graders for finishing up the year strong.  Great job, third grade!

Music: This week, students K-3 are reviewing material from the year. We will be singing and playing our favorite songs we learned throughout the year. Have a great summer! See you next year, and good luck at GRAIS 3rd grade!

Art: Grade 1-3 students brought their art portfolios home this week.  A portfolio is a wonderful tool for showing student growth in skills.   I hope you enjoy seeing a year's worth of art in this very  special keepsake!

Library: During library class this week, kindergarten and first grade students reviewed the definitions of coding and algorithms. They learned about what an epidemiologist does and how it is a computer science related career. Students plotted data points on a graph and answered questions about the graph. Second and third grade students reviewed how to choose a book that is right for them. Students evaluated whether or not a book was a good fit book for them based on the cover and a page from the book and responded to a writing prompt on Google Slides. Have a great summer!
