Mr. Ward’s Message:

With each passing month it is with great pride at Freetown Elementary School that we continue the deep, embedded tradition of Student of Month ceremonies.  With each month a student from each classroom is nominated by peers and/or their teacher.  Students nominated have put forth their best efforts in their school work, behavior, and efforts.  For the month of May these students best exemplify what it means to be a Freetown Elementary Student.  Congratulations to the May students that were nominated…

News and Happenings from the classrooms for the week of June 5-9:

Pre-School:   This week in preschool we reviewed our Lively Letters.  We also began making Father’s Day gifts  and brainstormed ways to make our dads feel special.  One class focused on farmers and played a garden letter recognition game.  Another class made a sand pail craft and learned about all the fun activities you can do with a pail and shovel, such as making sand castles and collecting shells.

Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten our HF words were- come, does. Our Wonders comprehension  skills were asking/answering questions and rhyming in poetry.  Print concepts were left/right and top/bottom tracking, return sweep and parts of a book. In writing we worked with stretching sounds to write words and sentence length. We continue to review skills in math. Classes have been completing culminating and end of the year activities.

Grade 1: This week in first grade we finished unit 13 in FUNdations. We focused on multisyllabic words. For comprehension we talked about characters, setting and plot. For writing and science, we finished the letter writing unit and started working on animal research. This week in math, we finished working on time and money. We also started our 10 Day Countdown!

Grade 2:  This week in second grade math we worked on tiling in rectangles and partitioning shapes into halves, thirds and fourths. In Fundations we reviewed the six syllable types. In reading we worked on determining the theme of a story. In writing we continued to work on opinion writing. In Social Studies we have been learning about national symbols. We are looking forward to our Second Grade Star Spangled Spectacular on June 14!

Grade 3: Third graders have had a very  busy week with their wax museum project!  Students completed researching their influential person of choice.  They put this information into a graphic organizer, created a large poster about this person, created a costume, and taught their peers and families about what they learned during the wax museum!  Everyone learned a lot of great information about different influential people around the world.  This was a very memorable experience for these hard working, dedicated third graders!

Music: This week, students K-3 have started the sixth and final week of their unit on performance. Grade 1 and Kindergarten are practicing performing by learning new songs such as Wishy Washy and No More Pie. 2nd grade will expand their musicianship by continuing to practice for our Star Spangled Spectacular. Third grade will be reviewing their repertoire learned throughout the year.

Physical Education: All students practiced the Fox Festival Games!

Art: Students are finishing up various projects that were started earlier in the year.  We are also learning how to create the illusion of distance in a drawing.

Library: During library class this week second and third grade students compared factual information about sharks to what they noticed about sharks in the video “Baby Shark”. We looked at the similarities and differences and if “Baby Shark” accurately portrayed sharks based on what they learned in the encyclopedia article.  Students determined which type of media they should use as a  source for information and facts and which one is for fun. Kindergarten and first grade students continued learning about coding and specifically which type of items use code and which do not. Students sorted the items based on whether the item uses code or not.
