Mr. Ward’s Message:

With summer vacation right around the corner we know students are excited about the much anticipated summer break.  We are excited for them as well.  But before we get to the much deserved summer vacation we want to ensure our students continue to come to school ready to learn as we wrap up another positive school year together.  In our classrooms, our teachers continue to push the needle on teaching and learning as we make our last month of school enjoyable as well as getting students ready for the next year’s grade level.  Please make every attempt to get our scholars to school each day as there is still much teaching and learning that is happening.

Other news and happenings...

  • With the end of the year quickly winding down a gentle reminder about upcoming field trips for grade levels.  With the generosity and support of the FES PTO some grade levels will be going on an off-campus field trip this year.  Please make sure you view the weather forecast and dress your child appropriately.  Also, please pack a lunch with non-breakable items and apply sunscreen if necessary.  We are excited that all students will have a chance to learn outside the classroom by being part of a special experience off campus.  For the classroom that are not going on off-campus field trips, the students will have on-site field trips such as a visiting museum.

News and Happenings from the classrooms for the week of May 22-26:

Pre-School:   This week in preschool we learned about the Lively Letter, c, a car who gets a flat tire.  We also continued learning about farm animals with a specific focus on cows and chickens.  Our caterpillars emerged as butterflies this week and we enjoyed watching this amazing metamorphosis!

Kindergarten:  This week in kindergarten our HF words were- where, look. Comprehension skills from our Wonders curriculum were time order and the importance of rereading. Print concepts were a review of distinguishing letters from words and parts of a book. In writing we focused on end punctuation, one idea and adjectives. We reviewed skills in math and we are continuing our butterfly life cycle in science. Classrooms are starting to hatch beautiful Painted Lady butterflies.  We all had a fun day on our field trip to Buttonwood Park Zoo on Thursday.

Grade 1: This week in first grade we continued to learn about multisyllabic words. For comprehension we learned about tall tales and exaggerated parts of these stories. In writing we are working on letter writing and an author study. The students will be writing a letter to an author. For math this week we finished up the measurement unit and measured objects using non-standard units of measurement like paper clips and string. In science we are working on the plant unit.

Grade 2:  This week in second grade math we worked on recognizing shapes and their attributes along with drawing shapes. In Fundations we reviewed the six syllable types. In reading we worked on identifying authors’ purposes in writing and text features. In writing we worked on opinion writing and learned about how to state an opinion and supply reasons to support an opinion. In Science we investigated animal and plant dependence.

Grade 3:  Third graders have continued to enjoy learning about the history and development of Freetown and Assonet.  Some third graders already went on their Tour of Freetown field trip to explore hands-on activities and meet important community members who play an important role in helping make Freetown a wonderful place to live!  Other third graders will be going on this special field trip very soon!  Additionally, third graders started working on their wax museum projects.  Students have chosen an influential person they want to learn more about, research that person, and organize that information into a graphic organizer.  Students have been enjoying learning new facts and sharing this knowledge with their peers!

Music: This week, students K-3 have started the fourth week of their unit on performance. Grade 1 and Kindergarten are practicing performing by learning new songs such as Wishy Washy and No More Pie. 2nd grade will expand their musicianship by continuing to practice for our Star Spangled Spectacular. Third grade will be reviewing their repertoire learned throughout the year.

Physical Education: Some classes finished their bocce lessons. Others worked at stations practicing skills they learned throughout the year. By the end of the week classes started to play a team building game that relies on communication, teamwork and social skills.
