Mr. Ward’s Message:

With each passing month it is with great pride at Freetown Elementary School that we continue the deep, embedded tradition of Student of Month ceremonies.  With each month a student from each classroom is nominated by peers and/or their teacher.  Students nominated have put forth their best efforts in their school work, behavior, and efforts.  For the month of March these students best exemplify what it means to be a Freetown Elementary Student.  Congratulations to the March students that were nominated…

Memo to Grade 3 Families…

On May 16th and 17th our Grade 3 Scholars will be participating in the computer-based Mathematics MCAS Exam.  Like ELA, we believe students will be prepared and ready to shine!  Our Grade 3 students' attendance was great for the ELA Exam and we are hoping for the same results for Math.  Please understand that time spent on the practice site outside of school hours is in no way a requirement.  This site is being provided as a resource for families who want to become familiar with the assessment and/or practice with their children.  The link is attached below.  Once you click on the link, scroll down to Mathematics Practice Test, and click on view Mathematics Practice Tests, then click Grade 3, from which you will need to select Computer-Based Practice Test.

News and Happenings from the classrooms for the week of April 24-28:

Pre-School:  This week in preschool we learned all about the letter, W.  We learned about Earth Day and the ways we can take care of our planet.  We learned the difference between living and nonliving things.  We planted seeds and will observe their growth during the upcoming weeks.

Kindergarten:  This week in kindergarten we started off the week practicing our speaking and listening skills as everyone was eager to share stories from vacation. In Fundations, we made words for decoding and learned about the digraph ck.  In our Wonders curriculum our HF words were- this, what. Comprehension skills were rereading a text and fact/opinion. Print concepts were using question marks and reviewing parts of a book. Our expository writing focused on end punctuation and sentence length. Lastly, our math lesson focused on position and shapes.

Grade 1: This week in first grade we started unit 11 in FUNdations. We focused on long vowel - silent e words in both reading and writing. For comprehension we discussed problems and solutions in stories. In writing we are working on poetry. The students participated in Poetry Week and read poems but also learned how to write poems. In math this week we put shapes together to make new shapes. In science, we finished up seasonal patterns and will be starting the plant unit

Grade 2:  This week, students K-3 have started the final week of their unit on musicianship. Grade 1 and Kindergarten are practicing elements of the beat to the song “Poem in Your Pocket”. 1st grade will also practice rhythms. 2nd grade will expand their musicianship learning notes on the Treble Clef Staff. Third grade will continue writing and reading music for their recorders and practicing pitch patterns.

Grade 3:  We are so happy to be back at school learning and seeing our friends!  In reading, students explored a new essential question: “what makes a good citizen?”  Students read a variety of short stories and engaged in great discussions while exploring this question.  In writing, students read and wrote a variety of poems for poetry week.  It was great seeing their creativity skills!  In math, students learned how to find the area of a shape.  In science, students explored reasons why baby animals may not have the same traits as their parents and how the environment affects these differences.

Art:  Each class of Kindergarteners is drawing and painting a different animal using simple lines and shapes.  Grade 1, 2 and 3 are all working on projects that help them learn how to create the illusion of space in their drawings.

Music: This week, students K-3 have started the final week of their unit on musicianship. Grade 1 and Kindergarten are practicing elements of the beat to the song “Poem in Your Pocket”. 1st grade will also practice rhythms. 2nd grade will expand their musicianship learning notes on the Treble Clef Staff. 3rd grade will continue writing and reading music for their recorders and practicing pitch patterns.

Physical Education:  This week students have been focusing on their cardiorespiratory and muscular endurance. When weather permitted the class to be outside, they practiced pacing themselves during a 15 minute challenge run/jog/walk. When class was inside they played cardio games like pacer relays, fruit loop tag, and baton relay. Students also practiced the frisbee throw.
