Library:

Thank you to everyone for supporting the Scholastic Book Fair this week! It was a huge success and we love it when students are able to add to their personal book collection! Students were very excited to come to the book fair and loved the experience of shopping for books.

PE

This week in PE we are continuing our fitness unit. Students are being introduced briefly to yoga and how yoga can help with stress and flexibility. We are playing a game on scooter boards that helps to strengthen leg and core muscles.

Kindergarten

What a fun and exciting week in Kindergarten!  We celebrated the 100th Day on Wednesday with lots of activities based on 100.  The students brought in 100th Day projects that they worked on at home and showed them to their classmates.  The projects were very creative using stickers, beads, Legos, flowers, cottonballs, and toothpicks to name a few.  The students also did some STEM activities based on 100 like stacking 100 cups, making designs with 100 pattern blocks, measuring things with 100 unifix cubes, building with 100 blocks, and creating things with 100 Legos.

Our story this week in Wonders was an informational text, Roadwork by Sally Sutton.  This book showed us how roads are built; all the people that are involved and all of the equipment that is used.  It was also a great book to use for sequencing because we learned that building a road is a process and things have to happen in a certain order.

We had a great time at the Book Fair this week too.   Everyone had a chance to buy some books to bring home.  At this level it is so exciting for the students to be able to go and pick out books about things that they enjoy.  Many thanks to Mrs. Sylvan and all of the volunteers that helped put the Book Fair together.

Grade 1

This week in grade 1, we learned about where our food comes from. We read a variety of nonfiction texts that taught us the process of how certain foods are made, such as milk, jam and orange juice. We also did a review of folk tales as we read The Little Red Hen. We reviewed the phonics skill of blends and were introduced to contractions and the r controlled vowels, ir, er, ur, ar & or.

By midweek, all grade 1 students celebrated the 100th Day of School! Many first graders aged tremendously over night, while others participated in making a collection of 100 things to display on a t-shirt. Other first grade students turned into dalmations as they celebrated the 101 day of school. Both days led to great discussions around 3 digit numbers and all the ways we can make 100 using coins, tens & ones, counters, etc.

Lastly, each first grade class had a wonderful time shopping for some new books at our second bookfair of the year! Thank you to the PTO & Mrs. Sylvain for organizing this successful and fun event!

Grade 2

This week in second grade we are learning about poetry. We focused on rhyming, rhythm and alliteration within a poem. Students are working with a partner to take turns reading different poems. We are also working on comprehension of a text. Remember to read with your child and ask them questions about the story you read together!  In math this week we are continuing to work on adding 3 digit numbers without regrouping using different strategies. We are also starting to regroup from our ones place to our tens place. Students have been using place value cubes, expanded form and an open number line to help them solve math problems.

In science some classes are learning about the different bodies of water on earth. For instance there are oceans, lakes, ponds, streams and rivers.  Some classes are working on different types of landforms. For instance plains, mountains, deserts, icecaps and valleys.

Students were also able to visit the book fair during their library class this week. Students really enjoyed looking through the different books and choosing their favorites.

We also celebrated the 100th day of school on Wednesday! Students enjoyed working on some different math activities using the number 100. We skip counted and solved some problems to then color by number and then view the mystery picture. Some classes also dressed up as though they were 100 years old. Students had a fabulous week!

Grade 3

In grade 3 we are transitioning to telling time as we wrap up fractions. We did some math and writing activities for the 100th day of school. In reading this week we are reading about the planet Earth and its neighbors in our solar system. We read an interesting article about Mars and NASA’s desire to send people to explore Mars. We learned about the rovers that have been sent to Mars over the years. As we wrap up our science unit on life cycles, inheritance of traits and adaptations, we are beginning to learn about the American Revolution in social studies.
