 A look into our classrooms:

Art:

Kindergarten students are working on their fine motor skills over the next few weeks by practicing using scissors. If you find that your child needs practice at home, try these exercises/activities. Scissors should be introduced to your child at 36 MONTHS.

First graders finished their line designs of van Gogh’s Starry night.

Grade two students learned about artist Jeff Koons and his balloon animal sculptures.

Grade three students are starting a unit on observation drawing. They are starting with a skull that Ms. T. purchased in Santa Fe, New Mexico!

 Music:

It’s been such a fun week in the music room! All classes K-3 are working on a song for Veteran’s Day as well as working on the xylophones to keep beats, exploring between high vs low and identifying xylophone patterns in songs. The third graders are also working preparing for their Winter concert which is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium.

**3rd grade families: This week the permission slips were sent home to purchase a recorder. Please make checks payable to FLRSD for $4.99**

Library:

It’s STEM Week in the library! Students in grades 1 to 3 are learning how to use Makey Makey with partners and creating a simple circuit using aluminum foil. Students in kindergarten are also using Makey Makey as a whole group and are listening to the story, Ada Twist, Scientist. Please click on the link to check it out- it makes an awesome present!

Also, the Storybook Pumpkins look amazing! Thanks to those that have already brought their pumpkins in! There’s still time to make one and bring it in next week!

PE

This week is STEM week in the gym! After a brief warm up to increase our heart rates we are discussing what an engineer is and what she/he does.  Students in all grades are learning how to play mini golf and then getting to engineer their own mini golf courses. Students are planning in groups how to build the course, building their course, and then testing it to determine if they need to make adjustments to make the course easier or more difficult.

Kindergarten

This has been a very busy week for our Kindergarteners! We kicked off STEM Week with a BOT! presentation where we learned about robots and were able to actually see some, too! Each day, we have a different STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activity to complete. Some of our STEM activities included building bridges, stacking cups, and using tweezers to carry pom poms into a cup. We also took a field trip to the Lakeville Fire Station to learn about fire safety!

We are learning about the letters Cc and Oo this week. We have been working hard on listening to beginning sounds and are learning the sight word: can. In our new Wonders program, we are answering the essential question of: Who is in your family? We are discussing how families are different, members of families, and things we like to do with our family. We are listening to nursery rhymes and were able to re-read our big book Animals in the Park: An ABC Book. In Math, we are working on comparing numbers within 5 and are discussing phrases such as “more than,” “less than,” and “equal to.”

Grade 1

Grade 1 has been enjoying STEM week and enjoyed the BOTs assembly that explained how to identify robots and were captivated by the robots that visited us both virtually and in person.  Students in first grade have been enjoying the following activities: Geo Pumpkins, Fall Flyers, Pumpkin Towers, Apple Boats, and Pumpkin Fence Building.  Ask your child about these STEM activities at the end of the week!

We are working on our second week of our new Reading Curriculum, Wonders.  We read the book, “Alicia’s Happy Day”, by Meg Starr and are exploring the question of the week, “What is it like where you live?”.  Students are working on sounding out cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant) words and are also beginning to explore reading within their own reading levels at center time.  In Math, students are learning different ways to add and subtract within 10 and how to count on from different numbers.

Grade 2

Hands-on science is one of the best ways to get students thinking creatively. This week the students investigated the effect different materials  have on the movement of a quarter down a ramp, they investigated the characteristics of materials that sink and float, and they created volcanoes using lemons. Also, the students were challenged to build the tallest freestanding structure using candy pumpkins and toothpicks and they experimented with dissolving candy corn.  The second grade scientists had a great learning experience.

In math, the students began learning strategies to help them solve one step word problems.

Grade 3

Grade 3 is busy having a great experience with National STEM week, creating turkey ziplines for our feathered friends to escape the fate of being Thanksgiving dinner! The children are showing their critical thinking and design skills, not to mention have a lot of fun! Thank you to all families who sent in materials for us to work with; we appreciate it.

In math we are wrapping up our first unit on multiplication, division, and patterns. Next week we will start Unit 2, which deals with using place value to solve problems using all four operations. In reading we continue to explore and navigate our new reading program, Wonders. In social studies we will soon being to learn about Wampanoags and Pilgrims.
