Hello Assawompset Families,

We had a great week here at Assawompset Elementary School.  I would like to say how proud I am of our third grade students for rocking their Math MCAS this week!  The second grade students rocked their Disney Performance and the entire school celebrated with the Toe Jam Puppet Band today/Friday for reaching our fundraising goal during this fall’s fun run!  Great job boys and girls!

A look into our classrooms:

Art:

Ms. T. is looking for donations of old, leftover acrylic paints. Grade three will be doing a “Jackson Pollock style” t-shirt painting party for grade 3 in June.

Kindergarten students learned how to weave with paper.

Grade one students are finishing their “sushi” projects.

Grade two learned about Marc Chagall so they can make animals-as-humans drawings.

Grade three is finishing their Square One Art lesson.

Music:

K: This week we worked on following along with a piece of music, playing their rhythm patterns on unpitched percussion instruments.

1st: This week we worked on a fun animal song for the 1st grade showcase that will  be held in June. Info from the 1st grade teachers coming soon.

2nd: Congratulations to the 2nd graders on a fantastic performance!!

3rd: This week we took our last recorder assessment for the year! The kids did a fantastic job learning B A and G this year!

Library:

Save the Date! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming next week to the library! Students will visit the book fair during their scheduled library time. It is a BOGO book fair so a great time to stock up on books for the summer!

Students in all grades are using different apps to program the Dash and Dot Robots in the library. They are learning sequencing and basic coding commands using Blockly.

PE

This week in PE students in grades 1-3 are finishing our hockey unit with hockey stations. The stations are designed to practice passing, stick handling, shooting, and goaltending. We are concluding with a game of offense and defense where most students attempt to score points going through the scoring areas while a few students attempt to defend the scoring areas.

In kindergarten we are beginning to learn some of our field day games by heading outside.

Kindergarten

This week in Kindergarten we read the text Bringing down the Moon and discussed the genre fantasy. Students have spent time reviewing sight words previously taught and reading for fluency.  In math, students worked on identifying solid shapes from flat shapes and discussed attributes of different shapes and shape names. In science, students are learning about the life cycle of a butterfly and have enjoyed observing caterpillars in the classroom!

Grade 1

The first graders had a wonderful time on their field trip to Buttonwood Park Zoo.  A huge thank you to the PTO and all of the volunteers that made this possible.   This week we also focused on the essential question “Who helps you?”  We read the story  Anasi’s Sons and learned how six (spider) sons worked together to help their father out of a sticky situation. In addition, we learned about all different kinds of helpers which include teachers, families and coaches.

Grade 2

The Second Grade did an incredible performance this week. They performed their Disney themed show for the whole school and their families. Thank you to Mrs. Eacobacci for working with our students to make this happen! In reading this week, the Second Grade is continuing with the essential question, “How does the Earth change?” The students have read stories on volcanoes and about brave firefighters who help during wildfires. These stories are filled with the vocabulary that the students have been learning and using in their own writing. In math, the Second Grade students are finishing with the geometry unit and beginning with fractions.

Grade 3

This week Grade 3 is focused on finishing strong on the math MCAS! The kids are well prepared and hard working. Thanks for supporting them at home with all the homework and practice.

We will be having some fun events coming up: wax museum showcase on June 14; PTO “Splash into GRAIS” fun day on June 16; walking field trips to the library the second and third weeks of June. It’s been a great year and it has flown by quickly; it’s hard to believe it’s almost over.

Would you like to be an AES Pen Pal?

Each summer children move to Lakeville and need a friend when they start school.  YOU could be that friend!  As a pen pal, your responsibility will be to contact the new student through letters, phone calls, emails or even play dates during the summer.  This way the new student will have you as a friend and feel included as a part of AES when school starts in September.  You may also be lucky enough to be in the same class!

If you would like to be an AES pen pal, please have your family complete the information on this form and return it to me by Friday, June 16th.
