Hello Assawompset Families,

We have been really enjoying the recent spring weather as classes spend more and more time outside.  Please remember as the season continues to roll in, that all students are to wear CLOSED toed shoes to school.  We understand that some children like to accessorize their outfits - however, SAFETY first.  Crocs are ok!

Also - speaking of SAFETY - please remember if you PICK UP your child at the end of the day that the fire lane is “ok” for a quick run in - but parking there is strictly prohibited.

Speaking of nice weather - let’s keep our fingers crossed for sunshine next Friday, May 19th

  • The Toe Jam Puppet Band is coming to AES! This is the school wide reward for raising so much during our Fun Run.  Your support and contributions are very much appreciated.  Let’s hope for nice weather as we will enjoy this event outside on our Assawompset field.

We are also learning a new way to pass the ball, the backhand or sweeper pass, while still working on our forehand passing. Lastly in grades 2 and 3 we are playing a possession game to continue working on  the concepts of offense and defense.

Kindergarten

This week in Kindergarten we read Ana Goes to Washington, D.C.  In this book, children learned about the United States and symbols of our country such as the bald eagle and the U.S. flag.  Students will work on the sight words this and what.  In math, students were introduced to positional words and used words such as above, behind, below, beside, and in front of to describe the position of objects in the environment.  Students also described objects using shape words.

Grade 1

This week our focus was working together to make our lives better.  We read the story, Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type.  In this story we found out how the cows and hens work together to get what they want.  In addition, we focused on opinion text.  We learned about being a volunteer and the reasons why we should be one.

Grade 3

Grade 3 is busily reviewing for the math MCAS. The students are feeling well prepared!

In reading, we have started Unit 5 in Wonders. It starts off with biographies, which fits right in with our Wax Museum project. The kids are getting excited about transforming themselves into popular and historical figures. Don’t miss this fun event, taking place on June 14.

In science we are still studying fossils.

NURSE’S NOOK

Preventing tick bites

Ticks live in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, or even on animals. Spending time outside walking your dog, camping, gardening, or school playground could bring you in close contact with ticks. Many people get ticks in their own yard or neighborhood.  After you come indoors, check your clothes and body.  Common spots to inspect are: in and around the ears, in and around the hair, inside the belly button, between the legs, back of the knees, around the waist, and under the arms.
