Hello Assawompset Families,

We had a great week here back at AES as students acclimated nicely after their spring breaks.  If only the spring weather would cooperate with us!  We are very excited for the remaining weeks of school as we have many wonderful things coming up.  This week we celebrated our Poetry Week as April is National Poetry Month!  We began with a School Wide Kick Off of DEAR (Drop Everything and Read)!  We continued with creating a Wall of Poetry, engaged in Poems in your Pocket and engaged in classroom visits to read poetry across the school.  Thank you to Mrs. Sylvain for also creating our Poetry Walk outside for students.  This has truly been one of my favorite weeks of the year!

A look into our classrooms:

Art:

Kindergarten students read the book More Than Peach, by Bellen Woodard. We’re making self portraits on our neon paintings from before vacation.

First graders read the book Yoko, by Rosemary Wells. They will be making “Sushi plates”.

Second graders played “catch up”!

Third graders  FINALLY starting their Square One Art by making hot and cold designs.

Music:

K: This week in music we are working again on Instruments of the Orchestra. We played a few fun games to help remember which instruments belong to which families.

1st: This week was all about dynamics! The first graders worked on their dynamics Piano and Forte. They played a fun Floor Is Lava game moving around the room using their dynamics as well as played unpitched percussion instruments using piano and forte as well.

2nd: The 2nd grader performance will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium. A letter was sent home this week with more information. RED t-shirts are due in school on May 2, 2023!

3rd: This week we are continuing our study of music and the brain. We talked about neuroplasticity and how playing instruments creates new pathways. We 3rd grades journaled about their findings as well as completed a quick worksheet showing by coloring what is happening in the brain when music is present. We also spent some time playing recorders, working on playing letters B A and G.

Library:

We are celebrating National Poetry Month this week with a variety of school wide activities!  Students in Kindergarten and first grade are listening to poetry and reading the class poems that other classes in our school have written.

Second and third graders are wrapping up the book trailer videos- most classes have filmed and are now putting their videos together using the DoInk app.

PE

This week in PE we are beginning our hockey unit in grades 1-3. Students are learning about stick handling and moving with the ¨ball¨. In grade 2 we are practicing safely passing the ¨ball¨ in small groups. Our focus is on making crisp passes while being safe with the stick and keeping it below our knees when passing. In grade 3 we are passing and moving with the ball and in some classes playing a mini game involving passing and defensive skills.

Kindergarten

What a wonderful week back filled with poetry of all kinds! We enjoyed reading outside with our stuffies, reading poems written by AES classrooms, reading with poetry buddies, writing our own original poetry, and of course PJ and popcorn day! We were also reading and learning about animal habitats through fiction and non-fiction texts. What lives in a burrow, lodge, den, or a coral reef?

In math we were comparing weights of objects. Our new sight words were said and want. Happy May!

Grade 1

Poetry is in the air at AES!  Last week, each first grade class selected a type of poem to write. Each class worked together to create an original poem to display in the hallway for all to see. On Monday we started our week with D.E.A.R time (Drop Every and Read). First grade students brought in their favorite books and stuffies and enjoyed reading with each other in the fresh air. We had fun reading poems with our classmates and also reading poems with a “mystery” class.  On Wednesday we were treated to a special performance of the Little Mermaid presented by the ARHS. Many thanks to our PTO for ending our week with a special popcorn treat.  Finally, we are all getting excited for our field trip to the Buttonwood Park Zoo on Tuesday, May 2nd.

Grade 2

We hope that all families had a relaxing and restful April vacation! What a great week back in grade two. Second grade learners had the opportunity to finish up three digit subtraction and transition to geometry; utilizing mathematical discourse and observing shapes and their attributes. In reading, students started a new unit in Wonders which encompasses the variety of similarities and differences between kids around the world; how are our lives and learning experiences the same and/or different? In science, students are beginning to explore the difference between fast and slow changes such as erosion vs. weathering to Earth’s surfaces – what does this look like? What is an example of a fast change? Second grade is also gearing up to celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 29th! We will welcome the Lakeville Garden Club to AES as members have prepared a special presentation for us!

In addition to starting a variety of new and amazing second grade units, students gear up for not one but TWO field trips – one will be an in house field trip which provides students to listen, learn and interact with animals from the Roger Williams Zoo. The second field trip will provide classes with the opportunity to travel to Soule Homestead Farm in Middleborough. What an amazing way to get out into the community and learn more about the responsibilities that accompany planting, weeding and composting! We are rocking, rolling and ready for May!

Grade 3

In grade 3 we hit the ground running after vacation. We are in the home stretch, with 38 school days remaining. We are preparing for math MCAS, and starting to plan our end of year projects. Stay tuned for more info in the coming weeks.

Friendly reminder:  Please remind your children to not refill their water jugs and thermos with AES water.  We encourage an extra bottle of water, or to come to the Nurses Office for a bottle of water if needed.
