Have a wonderful summer!

Oct. 27 - Nov 3, 2017

Greetings Laker Nation,

Come see ARHS’s rendition of “The Great Gatsby.”  The ARHS Players, under the direction of Ms. Kristen Lippincott, are sure to entertain.  The show is Thursday, November 2nd, Friday, November 3rd and Saturday, November 4th.  All performances begin at 7:00 pm.  Admission is $8.00 for students and seniors and $10.00 for adults.  Tickets will be available at the door.

The Social Studies Department thanks all who participated in our annual Voice of Democracy competition.  Congratulations to the following winners: 3rd Place: Sean Busse, 2nd Place: Cam Silva, and 1st Place: Clay Meunier.

Mr. Marcus Payzant, an admissions representative from MASSART, visited students in Mrs. Erwin’s classes.  Mr. Payzant spoke about MASSART’s programming, reviewed the application and admissions process and made recommendations about portfolios.  This was an excellent and informative opportunity for our students interested in pursuing college admission, as well as careers, in Art!

The AP Environmental class went on a day long field trip to the Lloyd Center for the Environment in South Dartmouth. The trip was specially designed for Mrs. Kirk’s students to experiment with the tools and techniques used in field ecology and to learn about the natural history of the region.  Students studied salt marsh, estuarine and maritime forest ecosystems using a variety of sampling techniques including water testing, seining and quadrat analysis.  Thankfully, the group had beautiful weather because the whole day was spent outdoors, including lunch.  By the end of the day there were a lot of wet, muddy feet and a lot of smiles!

HOSA, ARHS’s medical students club, was treated to guest lecturer Michael Langford from Southcoast Hospitals this past week.  As an Echocardiographer, Langford, had much to share with our curious future science majors!

Class of 2020 members engaged in a “Fright Night” that included a free movie and other Halloween themed events.  The evening was a hit!

Varsity Fall Sports Standings: Football 1-6-0 , Field Hockey 8-7-1, Volleyball 11-8-0, Golf 14-4-0, Boys Soccer 2-11-3, Girls Soccer 10-4-2, Boys Cross Country 4-2-1 and Girls Cross Country 1-5-0.  Check our school site calendar for all of our contest schedules and join us for exciting competition!

Mr. Solomon's Criminal Law classes went to the Bristol County Jail and House of Corrections for a tour of the institution and to participate in the Students Learning a Message (SLAM) Program.  Students were given a lecture by one of the Lieutenants and then shown around the prison itself.  The students were shown how the cell blocks operate and were able to see many different areas around the jail.  These areas included the housing area for illegal immigrants awaiting deportation, solitary lock up and the restraint room.  After the tour, three prisoners shared their narratives and engaged in a Q&A with students.  Overall it was an enriching experience.

Former ARHS graduate, Ayden Demoranville, was a guest speaker in Mrs. Tavares’s Sociology class.  Demoranville, who works with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's outreach program, spoke about gender diversity and gender inclusion in public schools.  He shared his personal experiences in life and in school.  Students found the presentation to be informative and an enhancement of the course’s curriculum.

It was Week 3 of College Fair Season.  Approximately twenty-five college representatives attended ARHS and offered information about their schools to our Classes of 2018, 2019 and 2020.  Please visit our site to see some photos.
