Greetings Laker Nation,

Our Voice of Democracy Competition winners presented their essays at the Freetown VFW last week.  Sean Busse (3rd place), Cam Silva (2nd place) and  Clay Meunier (1st place) gave excellent presentations in the presence of our local Veterans and their families.   Thank you to John Remedis of the Freetown VFW for supporting this competition and to Mrs. Laura Barnicoat for attending as a representative of ARHS Social Studies Department.

Auditions for Music Festivals sponsored by the Southeastern Massachusetts School Bandmaster’s Association (SEMSBA) were held on Saturday, February 3 at Hanover High School. Congratulations to the following ARHS students on their acceptance to Festival Ensembles: Rina Kada, Senior Band; Grace Couto, Senior Chorus; Kylie Gracia, Grace Manning and Kelsey Rioux, Junior Chorus.  Well done!

Seven (7) ARHS Band members - Jack Dupre, Becky Goodfellow, Rina Kada, Ben Kitchen, Katie Little, Reis Medeiros, and Emily Porter - participated in the 5th Annual High School Honor Band Festival at Bridgewater State University on Thursday, February 8.  The one-day event consisted of rehearsals and workshops with Stephen Meyer from the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY and culminated with an evening concert.

Cushman Insurance, Arbella Insurance and Officer Bartholomew are pleased to offer Distractology - a program to educate students on the growing issue of Distracted Driving.   Your teen is invited to sign up and take the Distractology challenge for free.  During the Challenge,  your teen will get a firsthand experience of how distractions interfere with their ability to react on the road, to see hidden hazards, and to avoid accidents.   Distractology will be at ARHS from 02/26/18 to 03/02/18.  To schedule an appointment for your student driver, please have him/her return the permission slip (posted on our site) and sign up in the Main Office.  Space is limited.  Please note only students who have had their license for less than 3 years or have their learner’s permit are eligible.  If you have any questions, please contact SRO Bartholomew at (508) 947-2660 x1304 or vbartholomew@freelake.org

Mrs. Cronin, Class of 2018 Guidance Counselor,  is pleased to report that 63% of our grade 12 students have applied to one or more four-year colleges as of February 9th.  Class members continue to apply and many acceptances have been reported.  Stay tuned for a detailed acceptance list!  Should you have any questions about the college application process, please contact Mrs. Cronin at  jcronin@freelake.org

ARHS held a Technical School and Military Fair this past Friday.  Over 50 students in grades 11 and 12 participated.  The students met with representatives from the following:

Bristol Community College, Bristol-Plymouth Practical Nursing and HVAC, Bristol-Plymouth Dental Assisting, Health Career Training Services, Mass Bay Community College, Massasoit Community College, Motoring Technical Training Institute (MTTI), National EMS Institute, New England Tech, Northeast Maritime Institute, Southeastern Technical Institute, Rob Roy Academy, Universal Technical Institute, US Army, US Coast Guard and the US Marine Corps.  Special thanks to Mrs. Cronin and Ms. Graf for organizing this excellent opportunity.

Our Art Department’s annual Visual Arts display at The Great Ponds Gallery at the Lakeville Public Library is scheduled for Saturday, March 3rd.  Stop by during the month of March and view the beautiful art work of students from ARHS and Old Colony.

SRO Internship members met this week and went over the ins and outs of becoming a police officer.  Among the many things covered, they discussed civil service vs. non-civil service, testing and physical requirements to get into an academy.  The students actively participated by asking many questions for SRO Bartholomew.

The Laker Athletic Development Program is well underway and a great way to get or stay in shape!  This no cost opportunity is an after school program open to all students.  Areas of focus are speed, power, agility, strength and mobility.  The program, overseen by Mr. Fyfe, runs Monday-Thursday from 2:00-3:15 pm in the Laker Fitness Room.  Please call Mr. Fyfe at extension 1121 if you have any questions.
