The Freetown-Lakeville Regional School Committee approved the 2016-17 school year calendar at their most recent meeting (see attached). The school year will start for staff on August 31, 2016 and for students on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Please review this advanced look for vacation plans for next year. In addition, the school committee released the Assawompset Existing Conditions Report with the first meeting of the AES Facility Study Sub-Committee established for Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 7 p.m. at the Assawompset Elementary School.
The FLRSD voted to remain a School Choice District for the 2016-17 school year, but did identify grades 4, 6, 9, and 10 as the only grades to accept new students with a total of 16 slots open. The district currently has 43 school choice students attending the five regional schools. All pertinent information on this topic including all forms may be found on our website www.freelake.org
The Freetown-Lakeville Regional School District School FY 17 preliminary budget focuses on restoring staffing positions, addressing class size numbers, and continuing initiatives in the following areas: technology, textbooks, security, and capital projects. We will continue to work together as a school community for all our children in both towns. The committee remains committed to providing staff support and necessary resources for all of our children.
Our next school committee meeting will be Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Apponequet Regional High School beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be an early release day for all schools, Thursday, March 10, 2016 for the purpose of staff professional development. The second “Quarter 3 Grade Update” is Friday, March 4, 2016. Please save the date for our Spring Parent/Guardian Night scheduled for Tuesday, March 15, 2016, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.
Thanks to the dedicated hard work and fundraising efforts of our Student Council, our entire school was treated to a day long visit from student selected motivational speaker Mike Smith. “Dude. Be Nice”, his mantra and message, will remain with us as we continue to act in mindful and kind ways toward others. Please visit our site and take a gander at our surprise recognition event!
The Apponequet athletic department is proud to report another exciting winter as the Ice Hockey, indoor track teams, basketball teams, and swim teams all competed with distinction and character. Participation was at a winter season high.
The boys and girls track teams made great strides. Their season culminated with several athletes, Jordan McCloskey, Nick Matson, Zachary Panaggio, and Andrew Peterson all competing in the state wide Pentathlon. Congratulations to these athletes, with special recognition to Jordan and Nick for finishing in the top third of over 120 athletes!
The boys and girls basketball teams both qualified for their MIAA tournaments. The Lady Lakers will play at Abington High on Wednesday and the Boys’ Team will play at home on Thursday. Both the boys and girls swim teams won their Conference championships for the second consecutive year and competed at a high level in the Sectional and State Finals. Congratulations, again, to all the hard working swimmers for a job well done. Ice Hockey continued to make improvements while competing in a very challenging schedule. The Laker skaters continually took on tough opponents and played with toughness and heart.
Our Rainbow Alliance and Diversity students participated in the Red Sand Project.
This art project, created by Molly Gochman stimulates awareness around human trafficking. Students poured red sand in pavement cracks and posted pictures on social media with the #redsandproject. Filling in the cracks was to remind us all of our citizenship and our obligation not to let others fall through the cracks.
On Super Tuesday, the Politics Club hosted the 2016 Student-Parent Mock Primary at Apponequet during lunch. Stay tuned for results!
Congratulations to Class of 2016’s Katie Muldoon! Katie won our AFS Global Prep Program Scholarship. This scholarship entitles her to experience an all expenses paid cultural immersion two-week summer program to Japan. Congratulations to the the additional 25 students who entered the competition.

The FLMS Cube Team :
The team is excited to announce that a big season-end tournament for all of New England will take place here at FLMS on June 11th. Students from schools across New England will be coming here to do team-solves of 25 Rubik's Cubes, along with individual-solves using both the traditional 3x3 Rubik's Cube, and the smaller 2x2 Rubik's Cubes. If you haven't seen this tournament in person, this might be something that you want to attend, as it is very impressive to watch. More information about this tournament will come at a later date, but mark your calendars for June 11th!
Grade Seven Field Trip:
The seventh grade will be taking a field trip to the New England Aquarium/IMAX theater on March 11. Students have just begun learning about classification of living things and will soon be studying ecosystems. This field trip will be a great addition to support the science curriculum!
The National Junior Honor Society and Grade 8 Friends of Rachel Club:
These two groups will be taking field trips to the Lakeville Senior Center. The first trip will be next Tuesday, March 8. The students will be playing bingo and helping members use technology.
The Pennies for Patients:
This fundraiser raised $1559.76! We would like to thank the grade eight Friends of Rachel for the large part they played with the carnation sales and counting of the coins. We would also like to acknowledge the grade seven Friends of Rachel for organizing and running a hat day. Thank you to all who participated and helped make this campaign a huge success.
Did someone say awesome? They must be talking about the art club. We have had a record-breaking attendance every week of 25 plus students. Remember, the art club is for all levels, abilities, and interests. Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grader is welcome to join. This year alone we have painted, sculpted with clay, drawn, and created many other exciting projects. We always have our die-hard Manga drawers (they love to help and encourage newbies) and occasionally a game of Magic Cards is started. Students are also welcome to join if they have work on which to catch up.

Happenings This Week:
It has been another great week here at GRAIS as we are just a few weeks shy of the end of term 2. We are continuing our first year of the PBIS program and have begun choosing weekly winners. Each weekly winner is provided with a certificate where they get to choose from one of 4 privileges: a night free of extra math, a night of no homework, a lunchtime sitting with friends of choice or a free Chrome book session for an indoor recess period. The Kid’s cabinet will be meeting next week to discuss the new privilege and tweak accordingly. Great job boys and girls as we continue to embrace our GRAIS core values of “respect, responsibility and safety.”
We are also getting ready for our Austin Pride ceremony to take place at the end of term 2 as teachers will, again, nominate 3 students that exhibit our core values on a daily basis. The “Homework Heroes” will also be recognized for turning in 100% of their assignments. I speak for the entire staff when I say how proud we are to be a true team here at GRAIS. .
The next PTO meeting will be held Monday, March 21 at 7:00 in the GRAIS cafeteria. We welcome any and all new participation to the meeting as we will be discussing the remainder of the events for the year.

4th Grade ELA & Social Studies:
Unit 3 continues with the theme of "Patterns in Nature". As we read, we question: "What patterns in nature guide the lives of animals?" "How have people explained patterns in nature?" and "How do weather patterns affect our lives?". Reading biographies, expository texts, myths and tall tales are guiding us as we explore. As we read, text structure and graphic sources are examined with non fiction texts. We also will practice the skills of concluding and inferring.
Social Studies continues the study of the US regions. Students are on their way to knowing their states and capitals as well as knowing why the regions are grouped together
4th Grade Math & Science:
Fourth Graders of GRAIS are working on division in Math. The students are learning how to divide using up to 4 digit dividends and they are learning to check their work with multiplication. Students are also learning about different types of lines such as rays and line segments and how these work together to make angles!
In Science, the Fourth Graders of GRAIS are learning about animals. They are discovering what the basic needs of animals are and how to classify different animals based on their various characteristics.
5th Grade ELA:
This week in ELA students began reading "Leonardo's Horse" which tells the story of his bronze horse which took over 500 years to be completed! While reading, students focused on identifying main ideas and supporting details. During writing workshop students were introduced to the components of persuasive writing, our next writing unit.
5th Grade Math:
In fifth grade math, we are wrapping up our study of fractions. Students now know how to add, subtract, and multiply fractions and mixed numbers. They also know how to divide unit fractions and whole numbers by each other and how to make and interpret line plots displaying fraction data.
This week, students are getting introduced to the classical composer Mozart and his work "The Marriage of Figaro." Students in both grades are making a music dynamic map of the opera. 4th graders are continuing to work on their yellow belts with the song "Gently Sleep" which features a B to G skip. 5th grade students are working on their composition projects in small groups.

Dear Assawompset Families,
This has been a busy time at AES. We have been celebrating Read Across America all week and have enjoyed the kick-off of our Read-a-thon, Mock Election of Dr. Seuss characters, Wacky Wednesday, the Kindergarten Parade, today’s Fox in Sox Day and will wrap up with dressing as your favorite literary character tomorrow. Though our activities were fun they all suggest the importance of reading and the different ways reading is used in our lives... there was a huge emphasis on FUN!
School Wide Elections: The results are in! The character most AES students chose based on their traits, likeability and popularity was the Grinch. I’m sure our students were favoring the Grinch’s qualities at the end of the story. Win or lose, all students walked away with a better understanding of our election process. Special thanks goes out to Mrs. Dube and Ms. Nash for organizing this event and having Mrs Martin come back to AES to teach our students about the election process.
Book Fair and Artapalooza: Both of of these events will begin on Friday and Saturday respectively. Ms. T has been busy with all her volunteers getting our gym ready for the Mexican themed event. Mrs. Sylvain will have the Library laid out with hundreds of Scholastic books for students and families to purchase. Students will be visiting the Book Fair between March 6 and 17. Families my visit during Artapalooza. These PTO sponsored events utilize a lot of manpower and volunteer time, so thank you in advance for your commitment to quality activities for our school community.

This week the kindergarten children have read the classic fable The Lion and the Mouse.The children have learned that a fable often has animal characters and always teaches a lesson or moral at the end of the story. The children made lion and mouse puppets and have been practicing retelling this fable with a friend. In math we continue to work with addition and subtraction stories and writing number sentences to go with our stories.
This week we celebrated Dr. Seuss by sharing some of our favorite books and participating in school-wide events like voting, “Wacky Wednesday” and “Dress Like Your Favorite Character Day.” We also began Unit 3 in Reading Street. Our focus was on how places can change. Our main selection was A Place to Play. In this story we learned how a neighbors can come together to make a positive change in their community. Our phonics skill was vowel sounds of y and we also focused on the sequence of a story.
It is Dr. Seuss week. The second grade students studied the character traits of four Dr. Seuss characters in order to be “informed” voters during the school elections. A new reading unit begins this week. The students will be finding answers to the question How can familiar things help us with changes? as they read the story A Froggy Fable. They will also be learning how to draw conclusions and learning spelling strategies for words with final syllable -le.
This week grade three students are reading a story entitled A Symphony of Whales. This is perfect timing since our third graders had the pleasure of attending the NBSO Young People’s Concert this past Monday. In spelling, students are working on words that have suffixes. Third graders are also continuing to practice MCAS passages and writing in preparation for the upcoming test next month! In math, third graders have continued to practice fractions. Students are also starting to learn about elapsed time in class as well. We also have had the pleasure of working with our math coach, Ms. Weitzman on graphing. In S.S. students are learning about Pilgrims and will be moving on to Puritans in the near future! They have learned a lot about the Mayflower Compact and how difficult it was to set up a new colony. Third graders are learning a lot this week for sure!
Kindergarten children are helping us decorate the gym for our art show. They made hilarious Mexican roosters from paper. Each certainly has its own personality!
Grade 1 students are finishing the paper version of Mexican Mola paintings. Molas are traditionally done in yarn, but we are using strips of colored paper on black. They will be on display at Artapalooza.
Grade 2 students completed their non-objective compositions. They traced old CDs and triangles to create a balanced composition, making shapes overlap. They used rubbing plates on each shape, then finished by painting them with watercolors.
Grade 3 students are beginning Mexican mirrors with Ms. Dmitruk. They will choose a paper from some traditional Mexican colors, creating patterns inside concentric circles with oil pastels. The center of the paper will have aluminum foil to look like a mirror. They will also be displayed at Artapalooza.
K: The children all learned a new song this week, Mr. Sun and kept the steady beat on unpitched percussion instruments. We even had a little extra time to play a fun game with
1st: In first grade, we worked on finalizing our songs for the big day! We had our first big rehearsal on Thursday as a complete 1st grade!
2nd: The second grade children were introduced to the next song for their performance in April, It was the first time they learned how to follow a real piece of music- they did a great job learning all about measure numbers and following repeat signs. They also review their rhythms and played Music Basketball to help.
3rd: The third graders completed a recorder assessment this week and continued to work on their Monster Eye Compositions in small groups. They will eventually perform their compositions for their class in the next few weeks on unpitched percussion instruments.
Kindergarten: We are learning about the Caldecott Medal that is given to a picture book with the best illustrations. We are reading two stories, Kitten’s First Full Moon and Waiting written by Kevin Henkes. The first book is the Caldecott Medal winner in 2005 and the second book won the Caldecott Honor this year. In keeping with a voting theme in the school, each class will vote which book they liked better.
Grade 1: We are reading Froggy books! Students love this series of books by Jonathan London. We are focusing on what makes a series and how we can all relate to the main character of the story, Froggy.
Grades 2: In second grade, we are reading a few chapters of a new series called Eerie Elementary. It is one of our book fair preview books that students have shown a lot of interest in. Students also were able to preview some of the other books that will be at the book fair next week.
Grade 3: In third grade, students are taking a vocabulary mid term assessment to see how much they have improved from the beginning of the year. They are doing a great job!
The Book Fair is coming! Flyers were sent home to students this week along with the schedule. Students will be visiting the book fair during their scheduled library time. All grade levels will begin their Basketball Skills Unit this week.
Basketball requires various skills needed to be practiced before actual game-play. Students in all grades level will practice skills such as: dribbling, dribbling in tight spaces, various forms of passing, defensive positioning, proper shooting form, and ball handling skills.
Kindergarten: Will focus on one skill at a time. Students will first practice basic dribbling technique.
Grades 1-3: Students will make their way through four stations, with each station practicing one skill. This week, students will practice the following skills: proper shooting form, dribbling form/dribbling in small spaces, basic chest and bounce passes, and defensive footwork.
A gentle reminder that Assawompset is a Peanut Safe school. Children may not bring in nuts or products that are made with nuts.
This includes: peanuts, all tree nuts and products like Nutella.
Products like Sunbutter are safe alternatives and are allowed at AES. If you do send a Sunbutter (sunflower seed butter) product it would be helpful if you include a note in your child’s lunch stating so.

Read Across America Day: The Freetown Elementary School staff and students celebrated Read Across America Day on Wednesday, March 2. Guests from the greater Freetown community were invited to join in the celebration and come read their favorite books to the students. Some third graders helped design personalized thank you gifts for our readers. We would like to extend our appreciation to the following community guests who gave of their time: Richard Medeiros, Natalie Dunning, Kimberly Sefrino, Ava Medeiros, Aaron Connolly, Amanda Gower, Caroline Sadler, Mary Rourke, Paula Rose, Sherri Barron, Nancy Brooks, Karen Cosgrove, Christopher Trivino, Kathleen Boren, Kyle Grenier, Ryan Pereira, Cindy Souza, Erin Smith, Bethany Pineault, Felicia Carreiro, Beth Nashawaty, and Dot Ponte. There was a level of excitement and enthusiasm for reading that brought the school and community together!
Grade 3 MCAS Math Night: Grade 3 teachers will be hosting an MCAS Family Math Night on Wednesday, March 16 from 5:30 - 6:30. We hope to see all of our third grade families there. If you have not responded to your child’s teacher, for planning purposes, please let her know as soon as possible.

FES Kindergarten Registration 2016: Kindergarten registration packets were mailed on February 22, 2016 to families who have children reaching kindergarten age (5 years old) by August 31, 2016. Contact information has been provided by Freetown Town Hall through data collected in the census. We are looking for the Class of 2029! Please spread the word! Parents and guardians may register incoming kindergarten students during the times below. Student screenings will occur on May 23 - 25, 2016 and appointments will be made at registration.

Classroom and Teacher News:
Preschool: We celebrated Leap Day and the preschoolers had a great time with frog activities designed for alphabet letters and math. We read frog stories and had a fun day. The key words for this week have been ‘books’, ‘reading’, and ‘Dr. Seuss.’ The preschoolers had a great time with all the silly Seuss days and books that have guided our learning. We completed many ‘Seussical’ activities and have had lots of fun. Each book this week helped us work on recognizing and practicing rhyming words. We learned a great deal about this famous author and enjoyed a number of guest readers in our room as well.
Kindergarten: The students thoroughly enjoyed reading week and celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday. In literacy, the students focused on creating rhyming pairs and finding rhyming words in books. In writing, the students decided that they did not like green eggs and ham but rather would eat different things in different places for a writing activity. In math, the students continued their work of adding and subtracting within 10. The students also brought in rhyming projects that correlate with our next CEPA whole class book.
Grade 1: This week first grade started Unit 3 in our Reading Street program. We discussed how places change. We introduced y saying the i and e sounds and action verbs. In math, we worked on counting with tens and ones. We celebrated Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’s Birthday by having guest readers visit our classes and enjoyed reading a variety of his books.
Grade 2: This week in reading, the theme for the week was on how plants change over time. The student read an expository text selection on the life cycle of a pumpkin. The skills were as follows: phonics was vowel patterns oo and u; comprehension skill was sequencing events in a text; fluency skill was accuracy. In writing, the students continue to work toward their research objective through the analysis of several informational topics. In mathematics, the students are adding and subtracting lengths.
Grade 3: This week we will be drawing conclusions and reviewing story structure as we read “Symphony of Whales.” In math, we will be starting our unit on telling time and elapsed time. Our next science unit will begin as we explore magnets! In writing, we will begin the informative and explanatory writing process.
Music: Kindergarten and First Grade students used the book “Green, Eggs and Ham” to focus on rhyming schemes this week. We realized the structure of song lyrics can be directly compared to the natural flow of rhyming books, especially Dr. Seuss books! Upon completion of reading the book and discussion, we listened to the song “Green, Eggs and Ham” from Seussical the Musical. We learned to sing the song and then created movements to highlight the rhythm words. This high energy tune is tons of fun, if you are interested in playing it at home, here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRlgsEc6ucs To celebrate “Reading Across America Week”, Second Graders participated in small books clubs which each featured a book about a traditional American folk song. After reading and learning, the class participated in a whole-class book talk lead by each group. We had a fantastic time singing through all the folk songs including “Skip to My Lou”, “Puff the Magic Dragon”, “Let it Shine” and “Home on the Range”. We were particularly inspired by the book “She’ll Be Comin ‘Round the Mountain”, so the next music class this week was spent writing our own lyrics to fit the rhythm and rhyme scheme of the song. The responses were clear and creative! Third Graders have learned all the required pitches on the recorder (B,A,G and E). They are now applying their knowledge by reading songs from the “FES Recorder Songbook” which features tunes of multiple levels and interests. This allows for differentiation to meet the needs of each musician.
Art: Kindergarteners created beautiful color wheels. After coloring, cutting and gluing, they added interesting lines with glitter to the corresponding colors. Grade 1 students are learning that adding white to a color makes a tint. We drew and painted colorful owls with tinted tempera paint. Grade 2 students are learning the difference between implied (drawn) and physical texture. They are drawing imaginative Chinese dragons and are giving them the look of scaly texture. Grade 3 students completed their chalk pastel butterfly projects. They have grown to understand that we use different techniques to apply different mediums and they are now experts at mixing analogous colors to make tertiary colors.
Physical Education: We continued playing 4 square this week. Kindergarten students practiced following the rules of the game with the bounce-catch-throw method. First graders worked on catching, striking and eye hand coordination in their second lesson using the bounce-catch-drop-tap method. Second grade students continued with their choice of catch-drop-tap or regular game play. They also learned the “Around the World” and “3 Against Me” variations of the game. Grade 3 children played regular 4-square, and in addition to “Around the World” and “3 Against Me” variations, they also had the option to pay “Odds/Evens”. When students had disagreements on who was out, they were encouraged to work out the disagreement using good sportsmanship and voting if necessary. This playground game promotes focus, good sportsmanship, fair play, and eye-hand coordination as well as practicing hitting, catching, and throwing skills depending on the grade level.
