DESE Commissioner Riley and the Department of Public Health announced a new COVID-19 testing program option that we will implement for our school district families beginning Monday, January 31, 2022. The FLRSD will continue to participate in symptomatic testing and discontinue contact tracing along with the test and stay program at all five schools. The district will provide all employees and interested families with home test kits from the state to monitor individuals and report back to the schools any positive cases. The test kits were distributed to our employees today. Families will receive their test kits next week. We are excited to have over 1,800 individuals sign up for this program to date. This flexible system should allow the safest and least disruptive plan to maintain our in person learning model.
The FLRSD website has reported 872 cases on the COVID District Dashboard for the 2021-22 school year, with 61 positive cases recorded this past week. We also continue to include school numbers, weekly town COVID information from the State, and updates from the DESE regarding COVID cases in the Commonwealth on our website as we continue to monitor COVID trends heading into the month of February.
Just a reminder that last week, DESE Commissioner Riley also announced that he is extending the mask requirement in schools through Monday, February 28, 2022. The Department will continue to work with medical experts and state health officials to evaluate the mask requirement beyond February 28, 2022. The 80 percent threshold policy remains in effect, and documents related to that, are posted on DESE’s COVID-19 Guidance page.
We have already safely completed 88 school days which is nearing the midyear point of this academic year. The Freetown-Lakeville Regional School District FY 23 preliminary budget will be presented on February 2, 2022. We will need your continued support as we look to provide appropriate resources to meet our growing educational needs during these challenging times. I will keep all stakeholders updated throughout the budget season on upcoming meetings and events.
The FLRSD will continue to use the One-Call Communication System to provide families with necessary safety updates and school cancellation or delay information. Please be aware that the state informed school districts that the current “snow day” plans will be for no school as we return to a more traditional “day off” approach. This may be adjusted by the state as we see the impact on school calendars. Our last day of school is now, Friday, June 24, 2022. The safety of our students and staff remains my top priority.
The next Regional School Committee meeting will be Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library. Please stay safe with the upcoming storm this weekend.
