8100 Haiku

Showcase

The following are examples of some of the illustrated haiku Mr. Marshall's 8100 students have done as culminating activities for their poetry unit.

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry first written in the 13th century and later refined in the 17th. It should come as no surprise that the Japanese would develop a form of poetry that exalts nature, because the Japanese have been nature worshipers for centuries.

True Haiku must (1) make reference to nature and a season of the year, (2) be able to be spoken in a single breath, (3) tell the who, what, and where of the poem, and (4) be written in lines of five, seven, and five syllables respectively, while only hinting at emotion.

Once students had written their haiku, they were invited to illustrate it, using such materials as they wished, most particularly construction paper and the like.

Shown below are scanned images of their work.
