Slate-colored Junco

Bird Name: Slate-colored Junco

Field Marks: This sparrow-sized bird has white outer tail feathers. There are four different races of the Dark-eyed Junco. One, most commonly seen at feeders, is the Slate-colored Junco. The males are darker in color than the females.

Feeder Food: Small seeds, cracked seeds

Natural Food: Food: Seeds, insects, some berries

Behavior: Look for juncos traveling in small flocks in winter. Sometimes in the company of other birds, they are very tame and come readily to feeding stations.

Song: a sweet, simple trill; a characteristic click
