Biofuels Demo: May 28, 2008

Patrick Keaney of Green Grease Monkey explained to our seventh graders how he converts diesel engines to run on vegetable oil. His lecture on bio fuel was very informative. He then had a question and answer period and the students were very interested and asked some great questions. He ended the lecture by taking them outside to show them his converted diesel Rabbit. He showed them the oil holding tank and the heating system and explained again how it worked. He also started the engine so the students could smell the exhaust which smelled like fried food. It was a great presentation. The students have been researching different bio fuels for the last couple of weeks and have been doing presentations in class this week. This presentation was a culmination to the unit on bio fuels in science classes with Ms. Sensabaugh and Mr. Friedrichs.

The Spirit of Sharing with "Stone Soup": November 2006

This week was a busy one in Ms. Welch's class. It was filled with drama, creativity and cooking and all of this was done with a great deal of enthusiasm. Throughout the week, the students worked hard getting their creative roles while reading "Stone Soup" by Fan Kissen. They each picked a part in the play, designed setting backdrops, collected props, and then put on a wonderful performance. The story details the trouble of two soldiers looking for food and someplace to rest. They were turned away by all the townspeople until they were enticed to participate with the prospect of delicious stone soup. Each student contributed an item or two to the soup and reinforced the belief that it "takes a village". They chopped and stirred and, eventually, they had cooked up a soup that fed an entire class, with some to spare. There was some concern that the stone would not add any flavor but the meal proved to be quite tasty and the aroma drifted down the hallway. It was a great culmination to a week filled with learning and creativity. A big thanks goes out to Ms. Cosgrove, our student teacher, who has brought much enthusiasm and passion to the classroom. Best of luck to her!

Peer Leaders' Red Ribbon Week: October 23 - 27, 2006

Red Ribbon week turned out to be a successful event this year.  This Peer Leader sponsored activity found students in all grades donating “spare” change to cancer research.  Those students who donated received anti-drug/anti-smoking stickers and the right to sign anti drug pledge posters.  Well over 300 students pledged to be drug free and wrote their names on the posters that were hung on the cafeteria wall.  It is hoped that these students will stick to their pledge for many years to come.

The busy week ended with a bombardment tournament and a fun movie afternoon.  When all was said and done, $272.00 was donated and will go to cancer research.

Thanks go out to all those who helped make the week successful and fun.  These included students, teachers, administrators, secretaries and custodial staff.  It’s great to see everyone working together so that good things and good times can happen here at the Freetown-Lakeville Middle School.

Read Across America: March 3, 2006

The 6100 team of Freetown-Lakeville Middle School held a Family Breakfast Celebration of “Read Across America” on Friday, March 3, 2006. More than 100 family members shared a breakfast buffet (food generously provided by the families) with their children.  Each student then recited a portion of Dr. Seuss’s Oh the Places You’ll Go or “Reading Adventures,” by Rosemarie Williams, this year’s NEA and ALA-sponsored theme song for this national recognition of reading. Special guest readers were Mrs. Kathleen Fortier and Mr. Scott Alexander.  The students recited the “Reader’s Oath,” by Debra Angstead, and closed the program with Shawn Bumpus’s solo of last year’s theme song, “Read Across America.” The family members then toured the classroom area to view artwork from the students’ portfolios, and other sample assignments from their academic subjects.  Finally, the students got to show off their published books, StudenTales, featuring examples of their class work in all subjects.  Many thanks go to all the participants!

First Annual Literary Luncheon: Wednesday, May 12, 2004

After reading the book, The Art of Keeping Cool by Janet Taylor Lisle, thirty eight sixth grade students and twenty senior citizens from both Lakeville and Freetown joined together on May 12, 2004 for the First Annual Literary Luncheon in our school library. Both the students and the seniors shared their thoughts on this historical fiction book. Artifacts from World War II were displayed and experiences were talked about.

At the end of the day, the students presented to the seniors an origami bird of peace and a book of original poems written by the students. This was a wonderful experience for everyone. The final consensus was this book discussion will be the first of many.
