Curriculum Outline
Computer Science courses meet as follows:
Grade 5: Once per cycle for the entire school year (60 meetings) at the George R. Austin Intermediate School
Grades 6, 7 and 8: Three times per cycle for half the school year (45 meetings) at the Freetown-Lakeville Middle School
Grade 5: Keyboarding, Introduction to Word Processing

Our goal is to allow students to become competent and skillful at using the keyboard, and to continue to develop keyboarding skills throughout their Intermediate and Middle School years. (Click here to practice keyboarding now.) In addition, an introduction to word processing and the production of various document types is included. Interdisciplinary work is coordinated with fifth grade English teachers.

Grade 6: Logo Programming/PowerPoint/Keyboarding
Also in grade 6, students are introduced to the practical use of PowerPoint presentation software. They create presentations to enhance their study in one or more academic disciplines. Finally, proper keyboarding techniques are stressed in grade 6. This continues keyboarding skill development begun at the Intermediate School.
Grade 7: Computer Applications I This course features an introduction to spreadsheets, both their creation and use. Also, students create a portfolio of their academic and unified arts work in the form of a Web page. View student Web pages.
Grade 8: Computer Applications II The initial focus of this course is an introduction to databases. Students learn to create a new database and to use existing databases to do research. The course features a capstone project which serves as a review of Powerpoint, spreadsheets and charting, Internet based research, database research, computer art, the creation and use of sound files. In all computer classes at the Freetown-Lakeville Middle School, students develop and apply computer knowledge and skills in completing relevant interdisciplinary projects. These projects, developed through cooperation between the computer science instructors, academic team teachers, special subject teachers, and guidance counselors, provide realistic applications to computer skills. Applying computer skills to "real" projects in various subject areas is the best way to achieve quality learning and mastery.
Grades 7 and 8: Computer GraphicsThis elective course features the basics of using computer art software to create still pictures and animated graphics. Basic animation, cartoon series, and morphing are introduced. View examples of student work.
