About Our School

School Overview: The Freetown-Lakeville Middle School, the regional middle school for the towns of Freetown and Lakeville, Massachusetts, opened in September 2002. School enrollment is over 800 students in grades 6 through 8. Academic subjects are team-taught by academic and special education teachers. Unified arts subjects are taught to students across teams by grade.

School Mission: The mission of the Freetown-Lakeville Middle School is to provide excellence in education through a nurturing environment wherein students can develop the knowledge, skills, and values for continuous learning.

School Philosophy: We recognize that learning is a continuous process of growth for both the teacher and the student; for both the individual and society. As parents are the first and most influential teachers in a student's life, we value and encourage their sharing in the process of student development and learning.

We recognize each person to be unique, differing in abilities, needs and personality. We further note the incredible diversity of physical, intellectual, social and emotional growth that are the hallmarks of the middle school-aged student.

The potential for creativity and excellence among our teachers and students encompasses a broad range of interests. Providing a challenging and supportive environment that is conducive to exploration, tolerant of mistakes, and capable of developing the diversity needed to stimulate this potential is the ambition of the Freetown-Lakeville Middle School.

Our school must aid the acquisition of skills necessary for academic and social success, foster self respect and respect for others, encourage self reliance and responsibility, and actively support the love of inquiry and search for knowledge that lead to life long education.

The capacity to solve problems, think critically, and communicate effectively must be linked to concepts of positive self-image, tolerance for others and the capacity to help others. We challenge ourselves as a school and a community to ensure the best development for each student.

School Objectives: We at the Freetown-Lakeville Middle School believe that education is the responsibility of the staff, parents, students, and the community. Therefore, we strive to:

a. promote open communication among all partners in the educational process

b. encourage a cooperative spirit between home and school in the understanding and appreciation of learning

k. present the skills and knowledge to match each student's individual capabilities, interests, and aspirations

l. promote self reliance and responsibility as lifelong skills that enhance academic and personal success

m. generate an enthusiasm for self-education through our teaching and example.

NEASC Evaluation: An eight member visiting team from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges completed a four day visit to our school's predecessor, the George R. Austin Middle School, in September 2000. The purpose of the visit was to assist us in evaluating and, ultimately, improving our curriculum, instruction, and all aspects of our school. We believe the visit was very productive and are currently using their report to help us implement suggested improvements. We wish to thank everyone who helped make their visit so successful!
