Information from the Massachusetts Department of Education:

The Importance of Eating Breakfast

Most schools understand the importance of eating breakfast at school during MCAS week, but what about the rest of the year? Research confirms that a school breakfast leads to improved student performance all year round, including:

• higher standardized test and math scores

• improved attention spans

• decreased tardiness

• reduced discipline problems and nurse visits

Many students don't eat breakfast at home and, if they do, it may be eaten too early in the morning to satisfy them until lunch. Encouraging students to eat breakfast at school ensures that all kids are eating a healthy breakfast as close to learning time as possible. You can encourage your students to participate in school breakfast by:

• offering "grab and go" breakfasts

• promoting breakfast with signs, letters, and announcements

• serving healthful breakfasts

• allowing students to eat in their classrooms

• working with principals and other school staff to emphasize the academic benefits of eating breakfast

With everyone's support, we can make sure that all students start their day ready to learn!

Download Breakfast Brainstorm, a newsletter from the Mass. Dept. of Education's Child Nutrition Outreach Program. It includes information on the importance of eating breakfast, particularly during MCAS exams, and new USDA dietary guidelines.
