Dear Families, On February 2nd the Ground Hog did see his shadow and gave us the message that we would have six more weeks of winter. I am sure the Groundhog would agree that the accuracy of predicting the weather is always tricky as we saw on February 10th. Please remember that when these calls are made they are made with the safety of all our children in mind. We have all been made aware of the disastrous conditions in Haiti after the earthquake in January. Not too long after the earthquake, Emma Zinni, Grade 3, approached me and asked if we could have a stuffed animal and blanket drive for the children of Haiti. Although the blanket idea did not work out the stuffed animals did. Under the direction of Mrs. Sylvain we have collected over 800 stuffies that will be delivered through the efforts of the Bristol House of Correction in Dartmouth. We thank Emma for her concern for the children of Haiti and for putting her thoughts into action. Haiti was not the only destination of our efforts this past month. For several weeks Mrs. Sylvain has been working with Mrs. Connie MacSweeney, a representative of Hands Across the Sea, in collecting books for children in the Caribbean. Close to 3,800 books of all varieties have been collected and will be shipped shortly to schools in the Caribbean. Again, our children and their families are opening their hearts to our neighbors to the south. Thank you, Mrs. MacSweeney, and Mrs. Sylvain. Our Reading Incentive Program began on Monday, February 22nd and will run through Friday, April 2nd. With your support we hope that all our children will participate and come to our “circus” in the spring! Dismissals, parking and safety are always a primary concern. If you are planning on dismissing your child early, please call our office or write a note. The afternoon dismissal can be challenging and your help in making this run smoothly is very much appreciated. I cannot urge you enough to be careful and observant when entering the school via the front circle. Do not let the children into the driveway area. Please note that if you pass a school bus or a van in the school yard with the red lights on, you will be reported to the Police Department and be ticketed at $250 per bus. The MCAS Assessment will begin at the end of the month. Listed below is the calendar we will be following. March is always an exciting and fun month. We have the Spaghetti Dinner, Book Fair, Family Information/Movie Night and the Faculty-Varsity Basketball Game. If you have been cooped up all winter and have the “winter blues”, this is the time to break out and have some fun!
