Summer Reading
The GRAIS summer reading program is based on the idea that, although there is no such thing as a vacation from reading, summer reading should be strictly for pleasure!

Our summer reading program is based on incentive rather than requirement. It is an opportunity for students entering fifth grade at GRAIS to prevent the loss of reading and writing skills over the summer while earning recognition for their reading. Students who participate will receive a reading "reward" and a certificate of recognition.
Since children read on different levels, there is a variety of reading levels included on the book lists to accomodate all readers. Different books are appropriate for and appeal to different ages and personalities. Students should be guided by their own and their parent's discretion in choosing appropriate reading material. Students are NOT limited to choosing books from our suggested lists. We encourage students to be active participants in choosing their pleasure reading!
In order to participate, students will need to document their reading by responding to the reading in writing.
Students should prepare a written response addressed to Mrs. Ryder using ONE of the following prompts for each book read.
- Did the book make you laugh or cry? Why?
- Tell about some experience in your life that came to mind as you read the book.
- Did you, as the reader, wonder what would happen next? How did the author keep you in suspense?
- What did you learn from this book?
- Compare one character from the book to someone you know. How are they similar and/or different?
- What was the most exciting part of the story? Why was it exciting?
- Explain the main conflict in the story.
Responses do not need to be lengthy, but they should demonstrate that the book was read. Students can mail their written responses on postcards or letters addressed to Mrs. Ryder throughout the summer. Or, if you wish to save on postage, written responses may be e-mailed to Mrs. Ryder. Mrs. Ryder will also accept responses during the first week of school in September. Written responses must be received by Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Students who wish to participate in this program should not wait until summer's end to read for this program since the idea is for students to participate in summer reading. This program is not intended to be a part of our students' September workload and thus, September 8th is a strict deadline.
